My husband and I recently built our retirement home in the Cowichan Valley area. Our builder strongly recommended Cowichan Woodwork for our cabinetry due to his previous experience with them and the high quality of work they produce. Our home had several areas that required cabinetry – kitchen, 3 baths (including Master ensuite), laundry room, and utility/mud room – so fairly large in scope. We did not live in the area during the design and building of our home (a plane flight away), so this added another layer of complexity. I should probably add that I’m quite particular about what I like and picky about details and quality of craftsmanship. Not like other people aren’t, but I sometimes can go a bit overboard (at least I admit it and try to manage it, which hopefully saves me from being a client-zilla). Cowichan Woodwork did an excellent job from start to finish, from the design all the way through millwork, install, and touch-ups. During the design phase, Coleen worked with our designer and me to understand what my husband and I wanted and provided good suggestions when we weren’t certain. Coleen created several drawings throughout the process so we could see what different configurations would look like. This was especially helpful due to us not living in the area. When one of the products I wanted was no longer available, she was able to suggest another option that I wound up liking just as much. She also accommodated a few last minute changes, one of which helped make the kitchen that much more functional. I had a vision about what I wanted certain areas to look like, particularly the colour of walnut I wanted in the kitchen. Cowichan Woodwork carefully selected the wood from several sheets and was able to configure it all in a way that made it harmonize beautifully. There is a section with glass cabinetry that bridges into our living room, and the placement, colour, and graining are absolutely stunning. All of the other areas turned out really well, too. The installation crew was excellent. They were all friendly, and it was apparent that they cared about the quality of their work. I was especially impressed by Mike pointing out a handle size in one section that was different from the others in another section before he drilled the holes. This was something our designer and I had gone over multiple times prior to selecting the size we did. Having him point it out to us again in the actual space gave us time to revisit our choice, and we wound up switching it. You’d be hard-pressed to find an installation crew who was that attentive to details and cared enough to notify the client about something like that. Another factor that really impressed me was how nice all the staff were. Even if someone didn't have a clue who I was, I was always met with a genuine smile, friendly ‘hello,’ and offers to assist me when I went into the showroom. I visited Cowichan Woodwork multiple times to look at and ponder products; they have a fantastic range of cabinetry, handles, and countertops from which to select. With any project there are bound to be a few hiccups, especially one with the scope of ours. Challenges with our project included deadlines/timing (what project doesn’t have this), a misinterpreted drawing by a supplier, a dented cabinet door, and a countertop flaw. I thought that Cowichan Woodwork resolved these issues in a timely, effective, and highly cooperative manner. Would we work with Cowichan Woodwork again? Definitely. Would we recommend them? Without hesitation. Thank you, Cowichan Woodwork, for helping us create an incredible home which we will enjoy for many years!
